Photo sessions with kids

I love having photos sessions with all ages, but I do have a special place in my heart for the families with young kids! Maybe it's because I have young kids of my own, but I know the struggle and feelings surrounding wanting beautiful family photos. The tricky part is that our children can be very unpredictable! Sometimes a kid shows up to a session tired, cranky, or shy and they don't want to work with ANYONE! It can be a parent's worst nightmare for a session, but it's my job to help prepare and alleviate and stress surrounding little kids!

Tips to help prepare kids

  • Explain to your kids before the session what will happen. Tell your kids what they will be doing and what I will be do as the photographer. While most kids are comfortable with the camera on the phone, my camera is different and can be weird or make kids a little nervous. Explaining to them beforehand can help assure the kids that I am there to take pictures and help them have a good time.
  • For the littles I suggest bringing bribe treats (we will only pull these out if absolutely necessary). Because of dietary restrictions or personal preference I do not bring any treats. If you do, it’s best to bring treats that are highly motivating while still not being super messy! Examples- marshmallows (my personal choice with my own kids), fruit snacks, goldfish, etc. Things that don’t melt are always a great idea!
  • I will be there to help direct kids and follow their lead. Don’t stress if they aren't listening/looking. I will do my best to grab their attention! We will follow their lead to make it fun and enjoyable for everyone. I try to play games with them, make silly sounds, and play music if they have favorite songs. I never force kids into something, so if they are uncomfortable or upset we will switch it up!

Tips to prepare parents

  1. As long as the kids are not harming others, don't feel the need discipline the kids while at a session. If they don't follow instructions I have a few tricks to try to encourage cooperation.
  2. Don't stress! I know this can be so hard, but I as the photographer I want you to enjoy this moment too, so don't worry if they are loud or won't look. I will work with them. We will lean into the unpredictability together!
  3. Don't be embarrassed if your kid is having a hard time. Sometimes, no matter how much we prepare them or encourage them, they just don't want to cooperate. It happens and this is a judgement free zone. I will do the best I can to help your child feel comfortable. Sometimes that means I will back off and give them a little space. This gives me a chance to work with the other family members and get different poses and combination of family members.
  4. Tell yourself that you got this! Because you do! We will have so much fun together and we will work quick to keep kids interested and avoid the burnout!
